Electronic cigarette effects on cultured living cells officially published

The study on cytotoxic potential of electronic cigarette vapor on cultured cells has been published today by the journal Inhalation Toxicology.

In this study we tested 21 e-liquids from an Italian manufacturer (Flavourart). Vapor was produced by an e-cigarette device and it was extracted to cell culture medium. Similarly, smoke of 1 tobacco cigarette was tested. The extracts were applied separately on cell cultures, and cell survival was examined after 24 hours.

According to the abstract, smoke was extremely toxic, with only 5.7% of the cells surviving after 24 hours of exposure. Twenty e-cigarette liquids were absolutely non-toxic (survival more than 70%, in most cases close to 100% or even more), while 1 sample was slightly toxic. Even for that sample, cell survival was 795% higher relative to tobacco smoke.

Tomorrow we will upload a press release, so stay tuned…
