Chronic idiopathic neutrophilia, relieved after smoking cessation with the use of electronic cigarette

We have published a case report concerning a patient suffering from chronic idiopathic neutrophilia. It is a condition associated with consistently elevated white blood cells and neutrophils, without any apparent underlying cause (infection, malignancy etc).

The patient was a smoker and developed the condition in 2005. He had consistently white blood cell counts > 15,000 (reaching approximately 24,000) for 7 years. In 2012 he stopped smoking by using electronic cigarettes, after 2 unsuccessful attempts to quit smoking (one without any aid and one with the aid of varenicline and NRT). Six months later, the condition was completely resolved, and was confirmed by repeated measurements of white blood cells after 1, 2 and 3 months.

This was the first case ever published, showing that the condition was resolved despite the use of electronic cigarettes. Most probably, the condition was resolved because of smoking cessation. However, a significant message from this study is that the daily use of electronic cigarettes does not hinder the beneficial effects of smoking cessation.
